Antigona - Sofokle

BILJESKA O PISCU

1- radnja je sazeta i intenzivno tece kroz ekspoziciju, zaplet, kulminaciju, peripetiju i rasplet. Odigrava se na sceni, te gledaoci dozivljavaju sudbine dramskih junaka;
2- junak se ne slika svestrano, vec se otkriva samo jedna, dominantna crta njegovog karaktera;
3- remarke ili didaskalije (epski elementi u drami) su opisi i objasnjenja na pocetku cinova ili kratki dijelovi teksta u zagradama;
4- cin je dio drame, bez prekida od jednog dizanja pa do narednog spustanja zavjese. Cinovi se dijele na pojave- trajanje radnje od ulaska jedne licnosti na pozornicu, pa do njenog izlaska sa pozornice;
5- replika je pojedinacni govor svakog lika;
6- dijalog je razgovor izmedu dva lika;
7- monolog je produzena replika, kad jedno lice duze govori na pozornici o onome sto misli ili osjeca.

There once was a rich man who was near death. He was very grieved because he had worked so hard for his money and he wanted to be able to take it with him to heaven. So he began to pray that he might be able to take some of his wealth with him.

An angel hears his plea and appears to him. "Sorry, but you can't take your wealth with you." The man implores the angel to speak to God to see if He might bend the rules.

The man continues to pray that his wealth could follow him. The angel reappears and informs the man that God has decided to allow him to take one suitcase with him. Overjoyed, the man gathers his largest suitcase and fills it with pure gold bars and places it beside his bed.

Soon afterward the man dies and shows up at the Gates of Heaven to greet St. Peter. St. Peter seeing the suitcase says, "Hold on, you can't bring that in here!"

But, the man explains to St. Peter that he has permission and asks him to verify his story with the Lord. Sure enough, St. Peter checks and comes back saying, "You're right. You are allowed one carry-on bag, but I'm supposed to check its contents before letting it through."

St. Peter opens the suitcase to inspect the worldly items that the man found too precious to leave behind and exclaims, "You brought pavement?!!!"

A forester and a lawyer were in car accident and showed up at the pearly gates together.

St. Peter greets them at the pearly gates and takes them to the homeswhere they will spend all of eternity. They get into St. Peter's holy vehicle and head on down a gold road, which turns into a platinum road, which turns onto an even grander road paved with diamonds, to a huge mansion where St. Peter turns to the lawyer and says, here is your home for the rest of eternity, enjoy! And if there is anything you need, just let me know.

Then St. Peter took the forester to his home, back down the diamond studded boulevard, down the platinum highway, down the street of gold, down an avenue of silver, along a stone alley and down an unpaved footpath to a shack. St Peter says "Here you go" and goes to leave when the forester says "Waitaminute!, how come the lawyer gets the big mansion and I get this shack?"

St. Peter says: "Well, Foresters are a dime a dozen here, we have never had a lawyer before."

You'll Know It's a No-Frills Airline If:

1. They don't sell tickets, they sell chances.

2. All the insurance machines in the terminal are sold out.

3. Before the flight, the passengers get together and elect a pilot.

4. If you kiss the wing for luck before boarding, it kisses you back.

5. You cannot board the plane unless you have the exact change.

6. Before you took off, the stewardess tells you to fasten your Velcro.

7. The Captain asks all the passengers to chip in a little for gas.

8. When they pull the steps away, the plane starts rocking.

9. The Captain yells at the ground crew to get the cows off the runway.

10. You ask the Captain how often their planes crash and he sez, "Just once."

11. No movie. Don't need one.

12. Your life keeps flashing before your eyes.

13. You see a man with a gun, but he's demanding to be let off the plane.

14. All the planes have both a bathroom and a chapel.

A programmer and an engineer are sitting next to each other on a long flight from Los Angeles to New York.

The programmer leans over to the engineer and asks if he would like to play a fun game.

The engineer just wants to take a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks.

The programmer persists and explains that the game is real easy and is a lot of fun. He explains "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $5."

Again, the engineer politely declines and tries to get to sleep.

The programmer, now somewhat agitated, says, "OK, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $100!"

This catches the engineer's attention, and he sees no end to this torment unless he plays, so he agrees to the game.

The programmer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The engineer doesn't say a word, but reaches into his wallet, pulls out a five dollar bill and hands it to the programmer.

Now, it's the engineer's turn. He asks the programmer "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down on four?"

The programmer looks up at him with a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all of his references. He taps into the Airphone with his modem and searches the net and the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he sends e-mail to his co-workers--all to no avail.

After about an hour, he wakes the Engineer and hands him $100. The engineer politely takes the $100 and turns away to try to get back to sleep. The programmer, more than a little miffed, shakes the engineer and asks "Well, so what's the answer?" Without a word, the engineer reaches into his wallet, hands the programmer $5, and turns away to get back to sleep.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand A South Korean fishing boat sank in the Antarctic Ocean's frigid waters Monday, with 22 sailors feared killed in the open sea where vessels trawl for deep-water fish.

Five sailors were confirmed dead and 20 survivors were rescued shortly after the 614-ton vessel went down some 1,400 miles (2,250 kilometers) south of New Zealand, about halfway to Antarctica, South Korea's Foreign Ministry and coast guard said. Seventeen sailors were missing.

Anyone who fell into such waters would typically be dead in 10 minutes without special suits or lifejackets, though nearby fishing boats searched frantically in hopes that some may be in a life raft, New Zealand's rescue coordination center said.

"We were fortunate that there were a number of vessels in the general area (where the boat sank), so they were able to provide assistance," said Ross Henderson, a spokesman for the center.

It was unclear why the vessel sank in light winds and a relatively mild 3-foot (1-meter) swell.

Lee Wu-won of Seoul-based Insung Corporation which owns the boat said a South Korean fishing trawler operating nearby first contacted Insung officials about the sinking early Monday.

Tearful family members of the missing sailors gathered at Insung's office in the southeastern port city of Busan and waited for news on their loved ones.

The brother-in-law of the boat's missing skipper, Yu Young-sup, said the captain had told him he didn't want to work on the trawler any longer in a recent phone call. "I only hope he will return home alive," Kim Sun-su said, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The search for survivors was scaled down later Monday, and rescuers said it was increasingly unlikely further survivors would be found. Two New Zealand fishing boats were released from the effort, but three Korean vessels searched on, officials said.

The trawler had 42 people on board when it sunk: eight South Koreans, eight Chinese, 11 Indonesians, 11 Vietnamese, three Filipinos and one Russian, South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The confirmed dead included two Indonesians, two South Koreans and one Vietnamese, a ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of office rules. He said four Chinese sailors were missing while four other Chinese were rescued.

Many fishing vessels ply the remote seas to haul in deep-water fish such as the Patagonian toothfish, also known as Chilean sea bass, to sell to restaurants around the world. With world consumption of seafood increasing, commercial fleets have begun to operate farther offshore to meet demand.

Rescuers considered calling in aircraft from either New Zealand or from the U.S. Antarctic research station on McMurdo Sound, but Henderson said the plan was abandoned because neither plane could reach the distant search area in time to find survivors.

SYDNEY (AFP) Australia unveiled tough changes to finance laws on Sunday, banning unpopular mortgage fees and cracking down on price collusion between major banks in a bid to boost competition in the sector.

Treasurer Wayne Swan said the reforms aimed to empower consumers, bolster smaller lenders and secure credit flows to both consumers and business, pledging a "fair go in the banking system".

Targeting Australia's "big four" banks, the reforms ban exit fees on new home loans and allow the competition regulator to prosecute lenders for colluding on rates, after large hikes sparked an angry consumer backlash.

An additional four billion dollars would also be injected into the mortgage-backed securities market under the reforms, Swan said.

"Build(ing) up competition in our banking system will ensure that interest rates are lower over time," Swan told reporters. "It's very important that we don't let the big banks off the hook."

Credit unions and building societies would for the first time be able to issue covered bonds -- triple-A-rated debt instruments backed by mortgages or public sector loans -- as a "way of lessening our reliance on overseas markets" for liquidity, added the treasurer.

A government guarantee on deposits introduced during the global financial crisis would also be made permanent and extended to smaller lenders.

The long-awaited reforms follow simmering discontent over Australia's comparatively steep interest rates, which are now higher than 7.50 percent due to hikes by commercial lenders above the 4.75 percent official cash rate.

Holding the benchmark rate steady this month, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) noted that "lending rates in the economy are now a little above average" due to the commercial banks raising the cost of borrowing above the RBA rate.

Swan has slammed the "big four" -- ANZ, Westpac, National Australia Bank and the Commonwealth -- for moving above and beyond the RBA despite recording bumper profits, accusing them of arrogance and a "cynical cash grab".

Australia's banks were credited with helping the country stave off recession during the global financial crisis after they eschewed risky lending and investment practices seen in the United States and Europe.

But a series of seven rate hikes since October 2009 has hit home-owners, while thousands of customers are expected to join a potential multi-billion dollar class action suit against a swathe of unpopular minor banking fees.

Swan said the global financial crisis had significantly eroded competition in Australia's 2.5-trillion-dollar finance sector by sinking smaller lenders, leaving "competitive roadblocks" that gave the major banks too much power.

"There's no silver bullet when it comes to building up competition in the banking sector, but today I'm announcing a raft of changes which will further strengthen competition in this vital sector for the Australian economy," he said.

Several pieces of legislation have to pass Australia's finely-balanced parliament in order for the reforms to go ahead, with the ruling Labor party holding a majority of just one.

Swan said he was hopeful of getting the necessary support and he would be strongly arguing the case for reform, which received a mixed response from the industry.

Some critics said the latest changes did not go far enough, while the Australian Bankers' Association said exit fees reflected "legitimate costs of mortgages and banning them will hurt smaller lenders".

With prices falling well south of $100, and more and more players doubling as Netflix-streaming set-top boxes, holiday shoppers are snapping up Blu-ray players in record numbers.

So say the industry analysts at the NPD Group, which found that more than 400,000 Blu-ray players were sold during the week of Black Friday up an impressive 50 percent from last year.

While Blu-ray-player sales were up, prices were down way down, with the media price for a Blu-ray deck falling to just $113, compared with $145 for Black Friday week last year.

Among the best bargains: the LG BD530, a YouTube- and Picasa-friendly Blu-ray player that sold for just $69 on Amazon on Black Friday; since then, the price has crept up a few bucks to about $76. Another player that turned heads for its low price tag was the Toshiba BDX1100, which sold for as little as $59 the day after Thanksgiving.

What's driving all the enthusiasm besides the low prices, anyway? Turns out it's not so much about the stellar, 1080p picture quality of Blu-ray, or the sterling sound.

Instead, it's more about Blu-ray decks that offer the "whole package," as NPD VP Stephen Barker told Home Media Magazine that is, players that not only play discs but also boast the ability to stream movies and TV shows from Netflix and Amazon, music from Pandora, videos from YouTube, or snapshots from Picasa and Flickr.

And then there's 3D, with a good 15 percent of those buying a Blu-ray player during Black Friday opting to spend a little more for a 3D-friendly model, NPD says.

Wait a minute does that mean there's a huge, yet oddly below-the-radar demand for 3D Blu-ray movies? Not really, Barker notes in the Home Media Magazine piece; instead, it's more a case of shoppers willing to pay a "slight up-charge" so their living rooms will be 3D-ready.

There's something else behind the spiking interest in Blu-ray as well. Many of the shoppers I've talked to aren't going the Blu-ray way because they're dying for a perfect picture, or even because the want a device that streams videos. Instead, they usually just need a new DVD player, and they figure they might as well get a Blu-ray deck given the cheaper prices.

Meanwhile, there are those who are mainly interested in a box that does Netflix streaming (or Amazon On Demand, or Hulu) but have decided to get a device that plays DVDs, too. Since you're not going to find many Netflix-streaming DVD players out there, these shoppers usually end up getting a Blu-ray player, even though they hadn't been thinking about Blu-ray in the first place.

Of course, you'll pay a little more for a Netflix-ready Blu-ray player than you will for a straight-ahead Blu-ray deck (think $150 or so), but there are still bargains to be had. Just today (Friday afternoon), I'm seeing a pair of sub-$100 Blu-ray players on Amazon one from Sylvania, the other by RCA that do the Netflix-streaming thing, along with a Magnavox player that streams Vudu. Count on prices to fall even further as we get closer to Christmas Day or even better, the day after.

Another option for Blu-ray player shoppers is the PlayStation 3, long considered the best Blu-ray device on the market thanks to a steady stream of downloadable firmware updates — oh, and it also plays games, lots of games. That said, the days of the $300 PS3 being the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market are long gone.

So, are you in the market for a bargain Blu-ray player this holiday season?

SAN FRANCISCO A spam attack on Twitter shows why it's wise to use different passwords for Internet accounts.
Twitter said Monday that hackers broke into an unspecified number of accounts and sent spam promoting acai berry drinks. Twitter says the passwords came from an earlier breach at Gawker Media, which runs Gawker, Gizmodo and other technology and media sites. People who used the same passwords for both sites were vulnerable.
Twitter says it doesn't know how many of its 175 million users were affected. It says it proactively reset passwords it suspects were compromised. Twitter says only a small number of accounts were affected.
Attacks on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook are popular because people are more inclined to click on links appearing from friends, rather than e-mail spam.

MONDAY, Dec. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Taxing sodas and other sweetened drinks would result in only minimal weight loss, although the revenues generated could be used to promote obesity control programs, new research suggests.
Adding to a spate of recent studies examining the impact of soda taxes on obesity, researchers from Duke-National University of Singapore (NUS) Graduate Medical School looked at the impact of 20 percent and 40 percent taxes on sales of carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, which also included sports and fruit drinks, among different income groups.
Because these taxes would simply cause many consumers to switch to other calorie-laden drinks, however, even a 40 percent tax would cut only 12.5 daily calories out of the average diet and result in a 1.3 pound weight loss per person per year, researchers said.
A 20 percent tax would equate to a daily 6.9 calorie intake reduction, adding up to no more than 0.7 pounds lost per person per year, according to the statistical model developed by the researchers.
"The taxes proposed as a remedy are largely on the grounds of preventing obesity, and we wanted to see if this would hold true," said study author Eric Finkelstein, an associate professor of health services at Duke-NUS. "It's certainly a salient issue. I assumed the effects would be modest in weight loss, and they were."
"I believe that any single measure aimed at reducing weight is going [to be small]," Finkelstein added. "But combined with other measures, it's going to add up. If higher taxes get people to lose weight, then good."
As part of a growing movement to treat unhealthy foods as vices such as tobacco and liquor, several states in recent years have pushed to extend sales taxes to the purchase of soda and other sweetened beverages, which, like other groceries, are usually exempt from state sales taxes.
Other motions have seemed to target the poor, such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal earlier this year to ban sugared drinks from groceries that could be purchased by residents on food stamps.
Finkelstein's study, reported online Dec. 13 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that high soda taxes wouldn't impact weight among consumers in the highest and lowest income groups. Using in-home scanners that tracked households' store-bought food and beverage purchases over the course of a year, the data included information on the cost and number of items purchased by brand and UPC code among different population groups.
Researchers estimated that a 20 percent soda tax would generate about $1.5 billion in annual revenue in the United States, while a 40 percent tax would generate about $2.5 billion. The average household cost would be $28.
Finkelstein explained that wealthier households seemed impervious to the tax because they can afford to pay it, while poorer income groups weren't as affected because they tend to buy lower-priced generic products or buy in bulk.
"It's largely very cheap calories for them," he said, adding that store brands such as Wal-Mart cola also contain more calories than the name-brand Coke.
Dr. Stephen Cook, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Golisano Children's Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), said the study is valuable because it echoes the results of others similar to it.
"It's good to see an amount of replication in the findings," said Cook, also an assistant professor of URMC's Center for Community Health. "It brings up an important point of how we should address obesity, as a disease or a public health threat."
Despite the modest weight loss resulting from the soda taxes, both Finkelstein and Cook support such a measure as one of many possible ways to attack obesity, which affects one-third of Americans.
As for the revenue generated, it can also tackle obesity if it's funneled toward weight-control programs and not other government initiatives, Cook said.
"The other side of the taxing coin is what we do with the money," Cook said. "We need to take the revenue and use it for interventional programs instead of it being used as a money grab. I think it's good when it's properly done and the money is used for those strategies."
Cook added that future measures could include taxing foods with added sugars as well as lowering the prices of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and skim milk.

LAPORTE, Ind. Kate Ergang wasn't worried when two jackknifed semi-tractors trapped her and a friend on an Indiana highway in a blizzard. They had eaten dinner already and had blankets and pillows in the car. They talked, listened to their iPods and dozed off.

For the past three years, the government has worked hard and spent many tax dollars to find the approval ratings for unemployment.

They have concluded that a 7% unemployment level is acceptable to 93% of the working population.

Now let's just hope that the unemployment rate doesn't change.
